New Sleep Disorder In Children Affects Night And Daytime – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

Good sleep is not just about the quantity of sleep a child gets, it’s also about the . Now doctors have discovered a new sleep disorder in children.

say the restless sleep disorder, or RSD, affects children not just at but during the day as well.

Jumping, inline skating, 9 year old Emily Caveness is very active day and night.

“I wake up every few hours,” said Emily Caveness.

“She was at the bottom of her bed, or would have fallen out of bed, or her blanket was all over the place,” said Emily’s mother, Melissa Caveness.

Melissa tried everything to help her daughter get a good night’s sleep, but nothing worked. Until she saw a sleep specialist who diagnosed Emily with restless sleep disorder, or RSD.

“A newly identified pediatric sleep disorder that consists of frequent movements during the night once the child is asleep,” said Dr. Lourdes DelRosso, Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Department of Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine and Seattle Children’s Hospital.

This disorder can also lead to diurnal symptoms.

“Like daytime sleepiness or sometimes inattention, hyperactivity, maybe some school or behavior problems,” DelRosso said.

found that children with RSD had very low iron levels.

“Iron is a very important cofactor in the production of a neurotransmitter called dopamine,” said DelRosso.

Emily was given an intravenous iron infusion and took iron supplements for three months to her RSD.

“She slept better through the night. She wasn’t all over the bed, “said Emily’s father Andrew Caveness.

Her mood also changed. “Less moody and less tired,” said Emily.

Proving a good night’s sleep is not only good for the body but also for the mind.

“Your relationship with her sisters has improved, I believe, with better sleep,” said Andrew.

Emily is tested every three to six months to check her iron and ferritin levels. DelRosso says some children with RSD with mildly low iron levels can add iron-rich foods like spinach, liver, and iron-fortified cereals to their diets. Check with your child’s doctor before deciding to give iron supplements to your child.
