Heart attacks are a serious medical emergency that requires immediate treatment, the NHS warned.
Also known as myocardial infarction, the condition is caused by a sudden blockage of blood supply to the heart.
If you normally snore while you sleep, then you are at risk of having a heart attack, as it turned out.
Snoring is a common warning sign of sleep apnea – a condition that causes repeated pauses in breathing during the night.
Sleep apnea is one of the risk factors for cardiovascular disease, which includes heart disease and heart attacks, according to Harvard Medical School.
Men are more likely to develop sleep apnea in early life than women.
“If you have trouble getting a good night’s sleep, your partner says you snore a lot and you go through your day tired, the cause could be sleep apnea,” Harvard said.
“Sleep apnea does more than interrupt your sleep. It could also put your heart health at risk.
“Sleep apnea has also been linked to obesity, which is itself a risk factor for heart disease.”
People with sleep apnea are at greater risk of developing high blood pressure.
High blood pressure is a risk factor for heart attacks and coronary artery disease.
Harvard continued, “Do not ignore this important symptom. Ask your doctor if you need a sleep study.
“Snoring is a very obvious sign that you have sleep apnea, but it’s not the only symptom.”
Other warning signs of sleep apnea include drowsiness, morning headaches, and subtle mood swings.
Unhealthy diet could harden your arteries, the NHS said.
Similarly, all British adults should get at least 150 minutes of moderate activity every week.
Every seven minutes someone in the UK has a heart attack, charity Heart UK said.
Around 73,000 people die of coronary artery disease in the UK each year.
